Citizen Science in RENOVATE: Engaging Communities in Restoration and Monitoring
Citizen Science is a core component of the RENOVATE project, supporting its mission to restore degraded coastal and marine habitats across the Mediterranean through nature-based solutions, innovative monitoring tools, and community participation. By opening restoration activities to coastal communities, divers, NGOs, schools, and local stakeholders, RENOVATE strengthens social engagement and enhances the ecological impact of its interventions.
Supporting RENOVATE’s Restoration Actions
Citizen scientists contribute directly to activities carried out at RENOVATE pilot sites—such as seagrass meadows, macroalgal forests, and other priority Mediterranean habitats. Under the guidance of RENOVATE partners, volunteers help document environmental conditions, observe changes in restored areas, and record key parameters such as water transparency, early signs of stress, biodiversity trends, and the progression of transplanted or regenerated habitats.
These contributions enrich RENOVATE’s high-resolution monitoring strategy by increasing data coverage and supporting adaptive management.
