OGS

OGS (National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics) is a public research institution with an international mission. The Institute operates and develops its activities within the European Research Area (E.R.A.) and internationally, with a primary focus on basic and applied research in the fields of:

  • Oceanography (physical, chemical, and biological)
  • Marine Geophysics and Geology
  • Experimental and Exploration Geophysics

OGS uses its expertise in Earth, Marine, and Polar Sciences to contribute not only to increasing and disseminating scientific knowledge but also to the practical resolution of environmental, economic, and social challenges, in line with the National Research Program (PNR) and with the strategic objectives set by the European Union and international environmental policies.

Using its research vessel OGS Explora and other strategic and high-level infrastructures, OGS works to safeguard and enhance natural resources and the environment, to assess and prevent geological, environmental, and climate risks, and to promote scientific knowledge and culture. It collaborates with European and international institutes, high-tech industries, and qualified companies.
The goal is to facilitate the transfer of research results from the scientific world to the production sector, thus contributing to the technological and socio-economic development of the country.

The Institute aims to play an increasingly important and leading role within the Italian and international research systems by fostering synergies with other research institutions and maximizing local impact through a “glocal” approach: operating according to international dynamics while ensuring the global exchange of knowledge and advanced technologies, and at the same time allowing their positive effects on local territories.

Role of OGS

  • Experimental activities and development of restoration protocols for Habitat 1170, with particular reference to coralligenous biocoenoses and Cystoseirafacies
  • Development of experimental protocols for the relocation of Pinna nobilis
  • Monitoring of the water column, with particular attention to trophic status (nutrients) and characterization of phytoplankton communities
