CMCC
The Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change Foundation (CMCC) is a scientific research institution operating in the field of climate science. Its mission is to deepen knowledge of climate variability, its causes, and its consequences through the development of high-resolution simulations using global Earth system models and regional models, with particular attention to the Mediterranean area. The specific goal of this research is to provide scientifically reliable, rigorous, and up-to-date results that help investigate, understand, and represent the interactions between the climate system and society, promoting sustainable development and offering solid scientific knowledge to support policies for mitigating or adapting to the impacts of climate change.
The CMCC is organized into three Institutes, each composed of several Divisions:
- The Institute for Earth System Prediction (IESP), which focuses on improving climate modeling capabilities and promoting the transformation of scientific knowledge into advanced forecasting skills and planning tools;
- The Institute for Climate Resilience (ICR), dedicated to interdisciplinary research on climate, ecosystems, and society to support decision-making, planning, and investments aimed at climate-resilient development;
- The European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE), which operates at the intersection of environment and economics, assessing sustainable and socially inclusive strategies to address climate change and other crucial environmental challenges.
Role of CMCC
The RENOVATE project is coordinated by the CMCC, particularly by the GOCO (Global Coastal Ocean) division, which focuses on the development of innovative technologies and marine observations, as well as the development of interdisciplinary models and methods for research on operational marine forecasting and interactions between coastal zones and the open ocean.
The CMCC is involved in the following activities:
- Support for the implementation and data management of the Early Warning System (oil spill and sediments)
- Mathematical modeling in support of the Early Warning System and the monitoring system
- In-situ observations for the characterization and monitoring of the habitats targeted for restoration
- Development and maintenance, throughout the duration of the project, of a web-based GIS information system to support dissemination and public sharing of project results
- Support for laboratory and in-situ activities carried out by other project partners
- Communication and dissemination
