UNITUS-LOSEM

The University of Tuscia (Università degli Studi della Tuscia) in Viterbo is an Italian state university founded in 1979. The university is organized into the following departments: Economics, Engineering, Society and Enterprise; Innovation in Biological, Agro-food and Forestry Systems; Agricultural and Forestry Sciences; Ecological and Biological Sciences (DEB); Humanities, Communication and Tourism; Linguistic-Literary, Historical-Philosophical and Legal Studies.

In particular, the Laboratory of Experimental Oceanology and Marine Ecology within the DEB Department (hereafter UNITUS), founded in 2001 and located since 2005 inside the Port of Civitavecchia, is divided into an electronics laboratory, an ecology laboratory, an optics laboratory, and an oceanographic instrumentation laboratory. Its main research areas include the development of new technologies for the study of marine ecosystems, the study of oceanographic dynamics and their role in analyzing biological systems—particularly marine-coastal ecosystems—environmental monitoring, and coastal dynamics.

Role of UNITUS

The Laboratory of Experimental Oceanology and Marine Ecology of UNITUS plays a fundamental role in the project, supporting both modeling activities and in-situ operations. Specifically, UNITUS is involved in the following activities:

  • Support for the implementation of the Early Warning System
  • Support to the CMCC unit for the characterization of areas selected for the installation of buoy fields, anti-trawling barriers, and techno-reefs
  • Study of the water column, currents, and seabed
  • Support for restoration activities
  • Support for communication and dissemination activities through the creation of a Marine Education Center
